CCAI Residency
For one week, Yale Wolf and I lived in an alley between 1801 and 1805 N. Carson Street as part of an
experimental artist residency program. Instead of confining ourselves to a studio space as is
typical of most residencies, we searched out a public space to inhabit and reinvent.
During our residency we not only painted the entire space but became locals of the space. Here we
kept warm by constructing a make-shift house from discarded wood and cardboard, made fires to stay
warm and cook food, along with met the neighborhood.
The concept of the mural was to celebrate local Carson City bicyclist Glen Lucky. We chose Glen
not only because we are avid cyclists, but because he is an icon of determination and community
engagement. Mr. Lucky has cerebral palsy but he doesn't let that stop him. He has ridden about 40 miles
a day through heat, cold, rain and snow since he was 15 years old.
What initially started as therapy to loosen his muscles has turned into his passion. For us painting has
the same type of cathartic benefits and we wanted to truly inhabit that motivation.
